BioMed21 founding partner, Humane World for Animals, is offering two travel grants to attend the 2027 European Commisson’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) Summer School on Non-Animal Approaches in Science
The European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), part of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), is organising the sixth edition of the Summer School on Non-Animal Approaches in Science, taking place from 24 to 28 May 2027 at the JRC in Ispra (Varese, Italy).

About the Summer School
The Summer School will introduce participants to cutting-edge non-animal approaches, including advanced in vitro models, stem cell technologies, organ-on-chip systems, computational modelling and artificial intelligence. Through expert lectures, interactive discussions and presentations, participants will explore how these innovative methods can advance biomedical research, improve chemical safety assessment and support the transition towards more human-relevant science.
The programme will also provide opportunities for early-career researchers to exchange knowledge, develop professional networks and explore career pathways in non-animal science.

- Demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to advancing non-animal approaches in their research activities.
How to apply
Interested candidates are invited to submit the following documents:
- A short curriculum vitae (CV).
- The abstract of the oral presentation to be presented at the Summer School.
- Proof of acceptance to the Summer School.
- A short motivation letter outlining their interest in non-animal approaches, their commitment to promoting their use in research, and how attending the Summer School would contribute to their scientific and professional development
Applications should be sent to Francesca Pistollato at fpistollato@humaneworld.org.
Important: Applications for the JRC Summer School close on January 22, 2026. The JRC will notify all applicants of the acceptance decisions by email on March 3, 2027. Travel grant application deadline: To be confirmed following the communication of Summer School acceptance decisions.
Selection and notification
Applications will be evaluated based on the eligibility criteria, the applicant’s motivation and demonstrated commitment to advancing non-animal approaches in science.
The two successful applicants will be notified following completion of the selection process and coordination with the Summer School organisers.
Details regarding the disbursement of the travel grants will be communicated directly to the selected applicants.
We look forward to supporting the next generation of scientists advancing human-relevant, non-animal research!
